An RCD or Residential Current Breaker with Over-current (RCBO) is an electrical safety switch that disrupts a power supply when leakage to earth is detected and therefore prevents a sustained electric shock.
An RCD or RCBO is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution (electric shock) and fire caused by earth faults. If you touch an exposed wire or a faulty electrical device, you could get shocked by the flow of electricity from the electricity supply to earth. The device constantly monitors the electric current flowing through one or more circuits it is used to protect. If it detects electricity moving through an unintended route, such as through someone who has touched a live wire, the RCD will turn off the power very quickly, significantly reducing any risks associated with touching a live wire.
