A switchboard, also known as a main switchboard, a meter box, a fuse box, a power box, or a distribution board, distributes electricity throughout a property.
The switchboard changes the cable size from one large cable size to several smaller ones known as circuits. These circuits are wired separately so that if there is a problem with one circuit, the other circuits aren’t affected. Circuit protection devices have evolved over the years from fuse wires to circuit breakers and now safety switches (RCDs/RCBOs).
All boards are recommended to be upgraded to the current standard as it is safer and easier to reset power when it trips. It is not always a legal requirement; however, when making additions or alterations to a circuit then upgrades are legally necessary.
It is also highly recommended that you upgrade your switchboard before solar installation or smart meter installation. Most switchboards installed prior to 1990 are on an asbestos panel. A thorough switchboard upgrade includes replacing this asbestos panel with MDF and installing SPD/MPD (service fuses).
